obviously this is some sort of after market addition, if not just garbage at this point, but I'm wondering if anyone might know for sure what this is or what it may have been used for... I was thinking for a small illuminating bulb, but there is no wiring at all. it's on a standard table model victor VV-VI that I'm cleaning up.

I'm totally kidding. But don't let that stop you.
Looks like some sort of crane bracket, but who knows. It could also be part of some arcane after-market gizmo, like an autostop or repeater or suspension for dancing dolls, or any number of things.
I'd just leave it on there, as a conversation piece.

A flag holder to go with your red, white & blue swirled Vocalion record...

but a crane for what though? this is a standard internal horn VV-VI and there's otherwise no modification to the reproducer or tonearm that would allow for the use of an external horn supported by a crane.

Maybe a place to store the crank when you are taking the machine somewhere or storing it?
