since its acoustic reproduction i would say yes
and since this type of voice box is still being used in some new collectors toys as well as some japanese toys you could say that the talking machine has never been out of production if you call an edison doll a talking machine than this is also a talking machine

I wouldn't call it a talking machine, but it is a closely related talking toy

In the literal sense - it's a machine that talks - yes, but realistically no, for the simple reason that you can't change what the machine plays.

Not to mention this forum is really geared up discussing pre-1930 Phonographs with the rare exception. There is another forum "phonoland" that discusses anything for spring wound, electric, jukebox, etc.... .

I never realized how fascinating these little toys were, until this post sparked my curiosity. Check out this video showing how one works, there is a 12 groove "puzzle" record inside with the animal noises that are mechanically played with a vertical reproducer.

I kept turning the pointer the wrong way - Mommy had to send it away for repair several times. I must have been a dumb little brat.
