Ahh Rich, you're killing me! $700 is a great price for this really early example of the Standard (#3152) in its first couple of months in production. Were I not broke, I'd be writing the "s" word here. Hopefully whoever snaps this up will keep it all together as this machine deserves. Good luck!

Hi Martin.

I don't mind letting it go to much because I have a lower number one S283. I just bought some new machines and have to part with a few. As you say I hope whoever buys this keeps it together and enjoys it. It is a nice early piece.

is it missing the gear cover, or can it just not be seen in the photo?

This 2-clip Standard Suitcase machine #3152 has no gear cover. The bedplate is solid with no holes drilled for attaching the gear cover.

did they do away with them then? because your earlier one seems to have a cover.

My understanding is that the first ones did not have gear covers and that after a certain point it was hit and miss u till they became standard on all of them

Gear covers were sprinkled thru the early serial numbers. If you'll also notice, #283 also has a type 2 patent plate. It was one of the first to carry both the new patent plate and the new gear cover. The factory still had plenty of the old style plate to get rid of so they continued to issue the type 1 plate for some months. #283 may have been an early display or semi prototype machine. Or it could have been modified at customer request. I got my cleaning rag stuck in a gear train once, so a gear cover is useful.
