I'd like to know the title of the tune beginning at 1:53 in this Kaplan's Melodists record:

Barry Fitzgerald's character hums it, in The Catered Affair (and it plays in the background, supposedly on a Victrola....)

Sounds like an old Irish tune called "The Pretty Maid Milking Her Cow" but you might not recognize it as well if you don't hear at the tempo it's played on the Edison record.

Re: Come Back to Erin - medley
You are correct, and please forgive me for not knowing. I'm only a wee bit Irish (via great-great Grandfather Michael G.Dennigan of Sugar Grove PA, who was in turn half Irish) so haven't had much exposure to the culture. A lovely tune.

I've only heard it via a few traditional Irish groups or individuals playing it over the years. Wikipedia claims it was popular in the early 20th century, but I can't recall hearing it on another 78 or cylinder. It is a lovely tune.

Re: Come Back to Erin - medley
The first tune of the medley, "Come Back to Erin" (played here in fine lyrical legato style on the trombone!), is sung by the frog in the famous/notorious/infamous Looney Tunes cartoon "A Froggy Evening." If you don't know this one, look it up: it's an American classic!
