Edison GEM spring removal

Post by Gram1948 »

Hi

I'd best start off with an apology, just in case as a "newbie" I've posted in the wrong place.

I recently purchased an Edison Gem. Sadly it would not fully wind and ran for significantly less than a minute. I have gained some success by cleaning the spring in situ but it still suffers from a minor "bump" or two which I guess is old grease causing the coils to stick together. The only real answer seems to be removing the spring and whilst I have done this with gramophones and my two Standards the open spring in the Gem makes me less inclined to remove it without some guidance.

Does anyone have instructions on how to remove the spring and get it all back together again?

Thanks in anticipation.

Whoops! Forgot to mention, just in case there are differences in procedure, my Gem is the third version of the Model A.

Mike Field's book Restoring The Edison Gem covers this , and is a worthwhile purchase.
It's out of print but i'm sure you can find a copy somewhere:

Further to Steve's advice to obtain a copy of "Restoring The Edison Gem" by Mike Fields I thought I would just point out that whilst out of print for sometime the booklet is currently available again from the CLPGS at a cost of £6. Link:

Ordered my copy yesterday and just received it so very fast response time can be expected.
