L-Door XVI Art Case? in Ohio Auction

Post by Crank_it_up »

Saw this Victrola XVI on my Auction Zip this morning. Odd machine, with unique finish. Could it be a real Art Case Model? I bet it will go cheap.
Enjoy!

Not a real "art case" but rather an L-door XVI that was decorated after the fact, in other words, not done by Victor. I like it, though!

I'm guessing somebody's idea of decorating "that old thing" decades after it was made.

I personally don't like what someone has done to it but I would consider putting in a bid for the album boxes. IMO, that's where the value is.

In my opinion a Victrola with a special Victor finish has terrific value. A Victrola that was decorated when the machine was current by an outside vendor that specialized in providing that service has good value. A Victrola that was decorated by Aunt Lucy in 1960 that collected the silver ribbon at the county fair is nothing more than a curiosity. (Unless Aunt Lucy was my favorite aunt in which case it would be the prize of my collection!) It's my long distance opinion that this machine falls closer to Aunt Lucy than a professional after market decorated machine. The decorated paint looks old but it's not dramatic or theme related.

Reminds me of the mailboxes that the Norwegian women used to decorate 30-40 years ago. Paint remover will make short work of it. Ha! At least it isn't yellow or orange, then it would REEK of the 1960's!

Those VTLA-style box-folios have to be worth something...

I'm betting this is a suffix-C machine.

If it could be bought at a low price it might well be worth restoring the finish, particularly as the boxes are included and the "decoration" does not appear to have found it way into the inside compartments.

When a similar flat/satin black finish is applied to an old hot rod or motorcycle they call it a "Rat Rod" or "Rat Bike". Does that make this a "Rat-Trola"? Just wondering.....
