Edison cylinder machines at the dump

Post by emerson »

just a little story-----i was in the National Guard (West Orange, NJ) during the mid 1970's. An older gentleman, jack of all trades, and the cook, would go to the Kearney dump and look for "stuff". They, at the dump knew him and would let him wonder. He said there was smoke rising from some areas so you had to be careful. He said he found Civil War papers--that he gave to his son-in-law that was into that stuff. AND, there were Edison machines---he said they looked in really good shape from being protected under layers of stuff and maybe in containers. I was not into anything from the beginning of recorded sound, so I just listened. If my memory serves me right--his last name was Fox---too bad I was not "wise" enough to collect back then.

I can tell you a story that will make some on this board mad at me. About 10 or 12 years ago, I was accused of stealing from an old man that I loved. He is a collector also of junk machines. Anyway, it hurt me so bad to think and be accused of something like that, that I loaded up a 16 foot trailer or machines, parts reproducers and just every phonograph part I had and hauled it to the local land fill. I also waited for the guy to bring the big dozer over and cover it up. I stayed out of the hobby until a couple years ago.
Right before all this happened, this is the kind of stuff I saw this collector do. I had a Vic R and a hump back 2 in the back of my truck and was at his home. I asked him if he wanted to buy them for 600.00 each. He said let me think about it. Then an old man of which we both knew very well pulled up and saw the machines on the back of my truck. Oh Ronnie, I have been looking for a Vic R. All of a sudden, the geezer says those are mine. He sold that poor man the R for 1200.00. I have never hated anyone, and it took me many years to let it go. But let it go I did. He will pay on day.

i know how you feel stuff like that kinda stays with you deep inside
i was accused of stealing some records on a previous visit by a dealer and was promptly thrown out there i stood feeling like somebody had cut my heart out
it took several years but the real perp was found out and my side of the story finally proved true
its been 20+ years but it still hurts to think about this
the story was several berliner discs where stolen at this place at about the same time i found the same amount of berliners at a flea market so the dealer simply put 1 and 1 together because that type of find at a flea market simply couldn't be true
well i was vindicated and now the dealer and me have contact alldough he will never become my best friend

like i said this stuff kinda stays with you but like you i let go

tino

ps the berliners i found where not the same ones that where stolen

The thing I couldn't understand was the things he claimed were stolen was junk. Motors and parts. He has a building full of common machines, but a couple of Vic 6's. I am a Past Master of the Masonic Lodge and a Shriner, and my reputation means a lot to me. This man hurt me deeply and will never know how he affected me. He claimed ,25,000.00 dollars of parts were stolen when in fact, I don't think anything was ever taken. He is still cheating people that think he is a god, but I know him better than anyone on this planet. All he cares about is money. I bought my first couple machines from him at double the going price. 10.00 for a 1.00 Hank Williams record. Live and learn.
