Souvenir Personal 7" Record NBC Studio New York

Post by gramophone78 »

I have had this 7" vinyl record for many years and all this time I have never played it.

Well, I have now.

Mabel Blake of Vancouver British Columbia being asked questions like; where she is from and how long did it take for her to get to NY. Also, what route, cites did she see and what has she been doing while here.

She starts by saying the trip took four days and four nights. She went through Calgary, Winnipeg, Montreal and Toronto down to New York and has been sightseeing.

The NBC man asks her...."now that your here at NBC and could chose anything to do on the radio, what would you choose to do?".
She says.." I don't think I would like to be on the radio".

Maybe you can sing??...the man says.

"Oh no, I can't sing" she laughs.

He asks her what she enjoyed the most during her time there (NBC). She replies..."The one where they show you how to"........Unfortunately for Mabel, time, or rather space was up.

What a blast from the past.

Do you think I should try and look her up... ;).

Side two, is just a promotional message on how wonderful RCA and NBC are for the human race, etc.....

I guess you were to rush out and buy a R-93 player to connect to your RCA radio you already own...

Anyway, enjoy......I hope. Is this from the 1939 NY World's Fair...??.

Great! Sometimes these private souvenir records are real time capsules.

"Part of the great unseen audience"... I'll bet the announcer never imagined we'd be listening in 2015!

Just an up date.

The woman we can hear was Mabel Nellie Blake (born April 2 1892 died June 16 1985) never married. She was one of the "hearing" teachers at Jericho Hill Provincial School for the deaf and blind here in Vancouver from 1922-1935 and vice principal of the school from 1935-1952.

The Braille building (1957) was renamed "Blake Hall" after her in 1964.

Regrettably, the school became part of a decades long sexual abuse scandal and many deaf/blind children were eventually compensated by the B.C. Government and the school closed in 1993.

The school was located on very prestigious, prime land with panoramic city views and has now been redeveloped into high end condos.
