I have the very good Pathé Records and Phonographs in America, 1914-1922. City of London Phonograph & Gramophone Society had a 3-volume set on Pathé in Britain, but they seem to be out of print. I can't find anything about a good encyclopedic book about Pathé phonographs in general, giving details about all the different models including those sold in Europe. Is there such a beast in English?

Hi Clay,
During my intensive Pathé phase a couple years ago I too searched around for good books--but also could not find anything besides the Copeland & Dethlefson book (Mulholland Press) you already have.
Developing a Pathé addiction will mean you will have an increasingly hard time getting your next fix--unless the other Pathé folks on here are willing to share from their stash.

Re: Is there a good English language book on Pathé phonograp
As far as I know there is no publication abouth Pathé gramophones. Most books about gramophones include Pathé samples, but I never saw a dedicated book. Given Pathé's bizantine production, which seemed derived from a combination of granting almost unlimited creative freedom to its designers and use of whatever parts on stock to assemble their machines, a systematic compilation of their production, in the likes of the "His Masters Gramophone" book (B Oakley and C Proudfoot), would require herculean effort. Too bad, as Pathé is by far more interesting to collectors like me than HMV and Victor.
There is a very good web site that concentrates on the discography and the history of Pathé, http://www.delabelleepoqueauxanneesfolles.com/index.php.

Alas I have enough trouble with just my native English!

"HMV", really? The Gramophone Co. and its Sister Companies provide endless joy for collectors who are not just limited to one country.CarlosV wrote:Too bad, as Pathé is by far more interesting to collectors like me than HMV and Victor.
That said, I would also very much welcome a new book on Pathé (with English translation).

I was referring to the English HMV, Starkton, and I agree that when you add German, Spanish and in particular the so-called «colonial» models it becomes more interesting. However, when we expand to these non-English market machines, we stumble on the same problem as Pathé: lack of reference documentation.Starkton wrote:"HMV", really? The CLPGS three volume set of Pathé in Britain is still very much available but, for some reason which I don't understand, does not appear on the web site. Compiled by Mike Langridge and others, the three volumes cover all the Pathé records and cylinders issued in Britain as well as a history of Pathé in Britain.FloridaClay wrote:City of London Phonograph & Gramophone Society had a 3-volume set on Pathé in Britain, but they seem to be out of print
For details of prices/postage etc., drop an e-mail to the CLPGS publications manager, Robert Girling on: [email protected]
All the best

Re: Is there a good English language book on Pathé phonograp
When I went to Paris a few years ago I called into the Phonogalerie. There were numerous books on Pathé machines. I bought 2 books but they are written in French. It maybe worth contacting them because there maybe English copies.
I have a copy of 'Pathé Feres London Ltd' Phonographs Cylinders and accessories, written in English, but it covers a few phonographs, no gramophones is 32 pages and in black and white.
Not sure if this may help.
Regards Brian
