OK, sometimes you get lucky... (Edison version)

Post by 52089 »

While searching on ebay for Diamond Discs, I came across a group of records that the seller indicated featured "Baby Face", a nice title to have but not extraordinarily rare. Looking through the listing, the first picture also showed that there were several discs still in Edison sleeves, some with titles. There was also a non-Edison sleeve, and something else that got me excited, but I didn't want to get my hopes up.

Here's the pic - do you see what I see??

I read through the listing and the lot included "Let Us Not Forget", Edison's only commercially released recording of his own voice, which is always a nice title to find. Then I scrolled through the pictures and near the end, there it was, a clear picture of the very thing I thought I saw in the first group picture. Yes, the sleeve marked "The Music of Victory and Liberty", which is, in fact, the seldom found original sleeve for "Let Us Not Forget" with a transcript of Edison's brief speech on the reverse. It's not mint, but it's 99% there, which is more than you can usually say about these. It's probably going to a good paper conservator sometime soon. These hardly ever show up and I am very, very grateful to have found it!

In addition, I'll note that the LUNF disc was in excellent shape, as shown in the photos. The "unexpected" bonus was that one of the title sleeves was for a Rachmaninoff disc!

Like I said, sometimes you get lucky!

Would there be any way for you to please post high-res well-lit flat pictures, or scans, of both sides? That way we can see what they look like, and even create stand-in slipcovers for discs found without the original sleeve.

Thanks in advance for any help on this.

Aren't those 2 sleeves in back, with the center holes actually made for the paper label diamond discs? Rather than the etched discs now contained in them?

These pics were from the ebay listing. At some point, yes, I'll try to post better pictures. I may even have some decent color copies made too. However, I doubt it will happen until the fall at the earliest.

Yes, they are. This is how the seller had them in the listing.

All discs have been removed from their sleeves, cleaned properly, and put into new sleeves. Many of them were near mint with only 2 showing significant wear. Two of the discs have the correct title sleeves, always nice to find.

That's great. I have always yearned for Let Us Not Forget. And I love reading the sleeve notes. Most of them are very interesting!

The Rolf's actually sell reproduction sleeves for these Let Us Not Forget records.

I bought mine for the record.

You can contact them through their website. Last I heard they were asking $20.
