HMV Decals

Post by stevel »

Has anyone seen this type of decal on a HMV machine before?
Thanks
Steve

Yes, I have seen these on an HMV Baby Monarch. The Baby Monarch is an American style Victor I with this decal, instead of the data plate. I have the book His Master's Gramophone and saw it in there.

Thanks Harvey , it looked an interesting machine so I bought it!
There's clearly some case issues to look at , but it was the right price.
The horn I guess should be a bell type , but seems to be an original HMV/Victor horn even though it isn't a good fit.

Hi Steve, The baby Monarch looks like a late Victor I. The bracket, arm, and elbow looks like am American Victor 0, but nickel plated. One questions is the crank escutcheon. It looks like a piece of metal with a hole in it for the crank. Is the motor original? Overall, the machine looks original to me. I'm not sure about the motor.

The horn is the least of the issues, to be honest as this machine was sold later on with a standard Morning Glory type, albeit of uniquely small pattern. But yes the horn is wrong and by the way that is not an HMV horn on there at the moment. I'm not sure what it is but it looks a bit like an early Pathé type? The arm, back-bracket and soundbox are also completely wrong for a Baby Monarch. Where did they come from? I agree with Harvey in as much as I also thought the motor might have been replaced. I can't see any reason for that escutcheon otherwise? I've certainly never seen that back-bracket and tone-arm on an HMV machine before, let alone the Baby Monarch. I have the same machine and to my knowledge only the UK sold versions of the Victor I ever had that transfer applied to them. It is unlikely therefore an odd Victor variant. How else can this all be explained if this is not a Frankenphone?

To answer the original question, I believe my HMV 1 has that same decal.

Thanks chaps - it's of French origin if the plaque on the motor board is to be believed.
I'll know more when I get it but if it does turn out to be a frankenphone I can at least smile with the knowledge that the parts are worth more then it cost me :)
