Jelly Roll Morton and Jimmie Rodgers

Post by jboger »

Picked up two interesting records, both Victor Orthophonic Recordings. One is Jelly Roll Morton doing Wolverine Blues on one side and Mr. Jelly Lord on the other. The other is the second copy I have found of a Jimmie Rodgers recording, Blue Yodel and Out on the Mountain. Is there a way to tell if these are original releases? Certainly if I had a Jimmie Rodgers recording on a 1940s label, that would be a copy, he being long dead by then. But I think the Orthophonic recordings are contemporaneous with both Morton and Rodgers. Unfortunately the paper labels are both chewed up a bit around the spindle hole. I also found something strange to me, a Vogue Picture Record, a recording of Sugar Blues by Clyde McCoy. I have now found that there is a society dedicated to the collecting of these records. And mine is probably the most common Vogue record. Still, it's different, and I like different.

If your discs have the scroll label, then they are contemporary to the initial release. I don't think there is a way to identify reprints of the initial release, though. The scroll label was used up until the mid-thirties, so I guess there is no way to distinguish copies issued in 1928 from ones issued later until the label changed. Some detail on the disc may allow to date the print, but I leave that call to the experts.

Scroll labels dropped the VE on the label some time in the early 30's. I don't see it on 25xxx series ones.

My Orthophonic recordings have the scroll label with VE on the label. So would seem to be original.
