I'm Excited About A New Addition And Just Can't Wait Arrived

Post by gramophone78 »

In a couple hours I will be able to pick up an item I have wanted for many years. Normally, I would let the courier company deliver the item.
However, I just can't wait and told them yesterday I would drive over when they open at 10am and pick it up myself.
Now, normally I'm not this impatient. The truth is, we are busy later today and would miss the delivery. This would mean waiting yet another day.......can't do that!!!.... .

As mentioned, it is an item I have coveted for many years. I just never dreamed I would find and own one it this kind of condition.

I will post pics in about two hours. I know.....what a teaser start to a thread. Believe me...it will be worth it... ;).

Just got home and carefully unpacked the double boxed item. It was so exciting. It wasn't until I unwrapped it that the wonderful colors came to life.

This is a very early (circa 1904) dealer tin litho sign I have wanted for years. I just never dreamed of finding one is such pristine condition. Clearly, the sign was not hung in a store window as many were. This would have caused major fading. These thin, light signs were prone to corrosion from the elements.

A great display size at 22"-16" and in the original black wood frame.

The story about this sign is as fascinating as the condition.
It was found in the possession of a retired judge who's Great Grandfather was a Victor dealer in New York State. In other words, this has always been in the same family.

It will be proudly displayed within my collection and I am very happy I could share this great discovery with the forum members.

Congratulations, great find. Question: how do you distinguish an original litho sign from a reproduction? No problem with $20 pieces, but if I see one for much more I am very reluctant because of my ignorance on the subject.

Thanks

Well for starters, this sign is not reproduced as shown. Also, stone lithography is not what it was then. Look at the detail. I love the crackling in the black lacquer paint on the frame.I don't even want to wipe the image with a dry soft cloth....

Fantastic find! I got one of these a few years ago from a local collector and it is among my favorite victor advertising items. It's the top of the chain in Victor signs. And you are correct, in nearly perfect condition. Congratulations!

Thanks Dan. I haven't been this excited in a while about something. As you can see....it has never been removed from the frame. I would love to see who did the litho. I wonder if it was Shonk..??. They did most of Coca Cola stone litho back then.

This sign will now take the place of my 1921 dealer sign with factory frame.

I would have been just as eager to receive that package too.
That's as good as it gets.

Gosh!!...thanks guys. I feel like a kid with a new toy... I hope no one minds all the pics. I just gave the image a very, very light cleaning. Here it is now.

Over the years I have saved images of the few that have come to auction. After looking at what I thought were excellent examples...I can now see just how vivid the red is on this particular one...... I'm posting one to compare.

I need to get a Vic B now. Just don't tell my Wife.. ;).
