New to Forum

Post by NCYankee »

Hi. I am new to this forum. I am not a phonograph collector but recently picked up a couple at some estate auctions. Sorry in advance for any stupid questions I may ask.

I picked up two Victor Model VV-X machines at an auction a couple of weeks ago. The first is a "spindle leg" version. It did not run when I bought it so tore the motor apart and found that the pin that held the gear on the main shaft was broke, so when I was cranking it the gear spun freely and was not winding the spring. I replaced the pin, clean out all the old grease, re-greased everything, and it seems to run now.

A couple of questions.

The reproducer, or sound box (not sure of the proper term) is labeled "victor improved concert", Is this correct for this model or was it added on latter?

From what I have read the reproducers need to be rebuilt, to replace the gaskets. Is this difficult to do? In my brief search, I did not see parts for the "improved concert" do you any suggestions? I don't want to pay someone to fix it since I only paid $45 for the machine and it would cost more than that to have someone else do the work.

What is the best way to handle the cabinet? I just cleaned it with Murphy oil soap and put on some Howard's feed and wax. anything else I should do?

Thanks all.

-Ben

The improved concert reproducer was an upgrade for the exhibition reproducer which was what this machine came with. The improved concert is the correct reproducer but it's an upgrade for the earlier exhibition reproducer. The improved concert reproducer is also pretty rare.

Ben,
Victrolaboy was spot on, the improved concert is early, somewhat rare, and a nice upgrade. Depending on what you paid for the machine, you may have gotten your money's worth just on the reproducer. As for the machine, also a nice buy, I would love to find one for sale near me and would certainly bid on a spider leg X. The finish looks nice in your picture, and unless there are substantial issues not shown in the pic, I'd leave it alone.
Good Luck and welcome!
Matt

Thanks for the info. If I rebuild the reproducer, will the #2 reproducer gaskets work. I see a lot of those available, but have not seen ones for the improved concert. From what I have seen on other post they seem like they should.

Victrola #2 gaskets will be just fine with the Improved Concert reproducer.
