45rpm records on a credenza?

Post by Tpapp54321 »

While searching on eBay I found this accessory for a Victor credenza: http://m.ebay.com/itm/ORTHOPHONIC-VICTR ... nav=SEARCH it claims to reduce record wear and allow you to play 45rpm records :? Sounds a bit crazy to me but what do you guys think?

ehhhhh... I'm not sure I would trust it not to ruin 45s in short order, even with the reduced weight. Maybe if you could actually get the weight down to what an old 45 turntable might track at (which should only really mean bending the spring bar a bit higher).

I bought one of these, and actually it is an effective counterweight. Evidently I don't play 45 rpm's on it, but I think the seller's intention was only to show it can offload the weight of the arm-reproducer enough to allow it to play vinyl records without eating them right away. After some tweaking on the curvature, it is working as well as the one I have on my Expert (a standard counterweight made of a pole with a weight on the end), and contributes to reduce the wear on the 78rpms.

Even if the tracking weight was brought down to a reasonable level for a 45, I would think if the recording was stereo, compliance might be an issue as well? I agree though, I think this was shown as a "but wait..." type of sales tactic
