Victor VV 2-55 portable orthophonic buy

Hi everybody,

I recently purchased a decent VV 2-55 Portable orthophonic on ebay. After a few test plays, I began to notice a bit of buzzing when the music hit high notes. I recognized this as a tell tale sign that the reproducer needed a rebuild. I look to check the back of the reproducer and I find one small hairline crack across the center ring. After a bit of internet search, I found that these reproducers were indeed made from the infamous cracking pot metal. But strangely enough, I found that the VV 2-55's were made of a better pot metal than the large orthophonics and was less likely to crack. (http://myvintagetv.com/updatepages1/cha ... r2-55a.htm) So I guess I was unlucky. So the question is, is it safe to try and rebuild the reproducer? Or should I just take it to an expert? Or simply be on the lookout for a replacement reproducer?

Your help would be greatly appreciated, as I am new to the forum, as well as the hobby.

Welcome to the hobby! I've had two of those portable type reproducers rebuilt by Walt Sommers and he did a great job on both. His email address is [email protected]

I believe someone started a thread on here with a list of guidelines for new collectors so you might want to take a look at that (one needle per playing etc.) Enjoy!
