Just made a tool that will unscrew the screw on top of the bottom piece and directly under the top piece of an Edison DD reproducer. Pretty dirt road, still needs a bit of fine tuning, but it works! Used a Dremel for grinding and an old pair of pliers.

Interesting, my idea was to bend a screwdriver using a torch and pliers.

I am sure I have seen screwdrivers like that somewhere.

A little more grinding and it works perfect now. Cliff

Pretty Nifty! Good work! From the photo it looks very important to remove the whole swivel unit to clean up and lubricate properly to reduce wear.

Thanks! The swivel unit tends to gunk/rust up over time and can eventually inhibit the horizontal movement the stylus needs to track the grooves properly. I wasn't able to fix that until I figured out a way to remove that darned screw.

Took me a couple years, but I did it. Whew!

Cliff, how do you hold the weight from rotating when you put torque to the screw? Do you secure the hinge block so it doesn't rotate, or is the limit pin doing all the work?

Best,
Fran

The weight is still attached and I secure it with my hands while unscrewing it. It doesn't take much effort to secure the weight to prevent rotation. This tool doesn't work too well if the weight is removed first.

The first iteration of this tool had a piece of neoprene glued to the bottom jaw to prevent scratching the base of the swivel, but that kept falling off, so I just use a cloth for protection. I might grind the bottom jaw smooth, that should also help prevent scratching.
