Credenza $395 on Metro Detroit CL

Post by TonyJ »

This one's been on CL for the last few weeks and looked at it today and wondered if the price was a little out of the ballpark. Reproducer is pot metal but solid and no back bracket on the tonearm to deal with, has a few dings here and there on the cabinet and not sure if the speaker cloth is original. Not that I need another machine, but is this a reasonable price?

Tony, I think this looks nice for the price. It's a four-door, and I personally prefer that over the two-door design. The self-supporting tone-arm is a plus. If the reproducer sounds good, it may need little more than cleaning and a look at the bearings. The cabinet doesn't look too bad from what can be seen in the pics, and should clean up well, I'd think. The fabric does look to be a replacement. That's a deal-breaker for some, and you probably know that the few hunks of original fabric that can still be found seem to be priced at around a hundred dollars now, so that's a consideration. But if you can live with the fabric at least for awhile, not a bad buy in my estimation. The sound that a well-tuned Credenza can produce is well worth the time and trouble of moving one (~185 big lbs.) and fixing it up. And since it's been listed for awhile, it's possible the seller might entertain an offer. It never hurts to ask in a case like this.
