Reproducer storage trick

Post by PeterF »

As the years go by, many of us find that we've acquired a few (or more) spare/loose reproducers. With Edison cylinder machines, for example, it's conceptually possible to have an Automatic, a B, a C, an H, a K, an N, and an S - all to be used on a single machine under various conditions. And if that machine has a large-eye carriage, one can add Diamond B and N to the mix. And there are also the recorders. People with multiple machines usually keep one reproducer installed on each but can still have extras lying around.

So what do you do to store them when not in use? Sure, there are the little original cardboard boxes, handy but hard to come by at times. And some people just open the machine up and let the extras rattle around inside the case, under the motor, when not in use. Not too safe.

I stumbled on a great solution: watch storage cases. They are like jewelry boxes but with little padded compartments, and often with glass tops that allow display. They come in various sizes, and the prices are pretty cheap. And since all the loose reproducers are in one spot, you can find the one you want really quickly.

Here is one like the one I got: http://www.rakuten.com/prod/mens-20-wat ... 39998.html

The compartments are felt lined, and padded. In the picture the compartments look too shallow - but there is a removable square insert in each partition that you take out to make room for the reproducer. They are big enough for Victor and other disc reproducers, and stuff like carriage adaptor rings and tiz-its as well. No Edison Diamond cylinder or disc 'ducers fit though.

I've got no connection to this vendor, and am providing the link as an example only.

Interesting thought, as those styli are damaged easily.

What a great idea. I could use one of those. Are the compartments big enough to fit diamond the Edison O, M, Diamond A, B also?

An O fits, as does a Diamond B. Too lazy to try M or Diamond A right now but I don't think they will.

(The above could be read as a "humble brag" but I don't intend that at all. I'm just lucky enough to have that stuff here, after collecting for some years.)
