Edison W&M console reproducer

Post by BwanaJoe »

Howdy All,

Looking at a WM console machine with the the 10 and 12 inch butttons. The cabinet is in fairly good shape but the horn isn't moving and the reprocucor is missing so it is probably a no go at $200. However, I'm curious which reproducer it used and what they run to replace? They were nickle correct?

Thanks,

Joe

All types of Diamond Disc reproducer (except the Long Play model) are interchangeable and correct on all Diamond Disc machines.

Having said that, for purely cosmetic reasons, you probably want to get a reproducer with a finish (gold, nickel, gun metal) that corresponds to the plating of the parts on the machine you are buying. (There is also an oxidized bronze version, but that is only correct for the early A150.)

A "regular" DD reproducer with a good stylus is somewhere around $100 these days. The Dance and New Standard/Edisonic models are more expensive, and there is debate about whether or not they are significantly better than a good original anyway.

Don't be too bothered by the horn not moving. Parts for DD motors are plentiful and cheap and the motor is easy to work on.

Thanks. With the buttons on it I wasnt sure if it would have been an Edisonic or LP originally instead.

I think they probably came up with the stops for those sizes due to the fact that in consoles you can't see where the stylus is compared to the uprights. So having an easy way to set the arm in the right location is a big plus, I use it all the time.

Funny I went to a sale here last weekend an it had a console with a stuck horn. I couldn't tell from looking at it what the reason it refused to move was, but it was in such poor overall shape i didn't look very long. It did have the reproducer though an motor of course. I would guess if it brought 20.00 it was a lot.

The W&M console is not a common cabinet style and deserves consideration. If I did not already have one, I would gladly pay $200 if the cabinet looks good overall. Parts for all but the earliest Edison disk machines are easy to come by.

Joe, be sure to post pictures of it if you buy it.

Will do, but I think it is a no go at this point. She doesn't want to budge and I'm not paying $200 for it. It has no DD records, no documents, busted drive mech, no DD reproducer; just a broken Victor style adaptor. I'd be more willing to negotiate if it was an upright. Really love to find one of those.

I completely understand. Maybe in a few weeks she'll have a change of heart. ;)
