If there were such tax stamps, they would likely be mentioned and perhaps illustrated here:

Speaking of records, I would buy more from the U.K. but the shipping is outrageous.

Yes, the shipping is outrageous. It is mostly due to taxes, I think. Shipping from some foreign countries is much more reasonable, so I don't believe the problem is cost of fuel.

Postage WITHIN the UK is also outrageous, but to return to the subject....

In October 1915 the British Government imposed a tax of 33.3% on all talking machine products, and the importation of such products was prohibited by further legislation from 21st March 1916. The import restrictions were lifted in June 1919, but the tax was not!

It is perhaps worth remembering that Income Tax was introduced in Britain as a temporary measure to fund the Napoleonic Wars, but it is still with us.

Check out the stamps on my Gilbert and Sullivan records imported by Victor. http://forum.talkingmachine.info/viewto ... =3&t=23671

Mecolico stamps signify the payment of a levy to the owner of the copyright of the music, rather than a Government tax.

True. It works both ways I suppose. It does keep some of us here in the colonies from buying records from the mother country from doing so though.
