craigslist alert: Edison C-1 radio / phonograph

Post by phonophan79 »

I wish this weren't across the country or I'd snatch it up... seller posts starting price at $2,000 OBO which seems like an economy special for this machine.

Edison C-1 Radio Phonograph (from Splitdorf Radio Cororation, with 10" Peerless dynamic speaker) This rare phonograph plays DD's and lateral 78's.

Wow! I wish I could afford to buy that one!
This is the first one I have seen for sale, I can't believe this person will part with such a rare and beautiful Edison Phonograph!

It's painfully obvious that the seller is looking to cash in on his lucky find. If he truly appreciated this piece, he probably would not sell it. Also, based upon context, I have discovered the seller's true motives.

See: "an i will only sell it too someone who apperciates its value"
Read: "I will only sell it to the highest bidder, someone who is, ideally, willing to offer me an unrealistically high price."

Before anybody gets overly excited, this isn't a C-1, it's a Splitdorf M6 radio only.

The C-1 uses the same radio/amp/speakers as the M6, the cabinet is similar but more boxy and not as elegant.

I emailed the seller and explained what he had, and if he really had someone offer him $2K, he should be running after the guy.

I emailed the guy about two weeks ago when the ad first appeared with my concerns about his description and asking for the price (in its original form, the ad had no price). He emailed me back only: "how much you want pay". Disgusted, I emailed back: "I asked you first". That was the end of the line for me. Next time Iooked at the ad, the $2K price was quoted.

The oddest thing, to me anyway, is that the guy is still advertising it as a C-1 when there's no turntable where there should be one. (Thanks to Phonophan79 for providing the second link that shows the _real_ article).

It's a nice example of a Splitdorf, and would probably sell if it were advertised as such, but stating it is an Edison C-1 when it obviously isn't does nothing for the guy's credibility.

Actually there is no place where a turntable should be, on the M6 the radio is in the center of the cabinet.

The closeup picture of the radio is from my set that he "borrowed" from my web site.
