Question about the Buy & Sale Trader Forum?

Post by Talkophone »

Why do some people post on that forum wanting some records by a certain person. Then after looking for 3 hours thru records and listening to cylinder records typing up a list. Then they don't even get back to about what you have. Contacted the person because I thought he might not have received the list. Didn't even tell me he wanted anything off the list. Wouldn't care but he has bumped his listing before I answered with I would look for him. You can bet I will never look for anything again to help a person. Just had to get this off my chest. Now I feel better.

Larry,

The answer to your question is, because he is inconsiderate. The best response is to not let him modify your own behavior.

Larry, I understand where you are coming from. I hate it when you are busting your tail and they don't have the common courtesy to let you know if they want the item or service. I also hate it if a collector needs a part and I have it, my policy is I will let the person have it at my cost. Then they try to beat you up and expect you to take a loss. After those encounters, that person will never get a favor from me again. Another thing I hate is when someones cry's the blues that they need a part to complete a machine, I let them have the part at my cost or give it to them. Then they list it on ebay. Fortunately, word gets around about these people, and thier reputation is damaged, and nobody will help them. OK, rant over. Back to working on Phonographs. :D :D

That would upset me quite a bit as well Larry.

I also dislike when people post for sale ads on Craigslist and
then don't respond when you have an inquiry.

Jerry's advice is best, don't punish all the considerate people by not helping them because one
of person is a bit of a goof.

There are sellers like that as well. Responding to your wanted post with offering a part, you accept the suggested price, even offer to pay in advance. Selller says "not necessary, I will let you know the total when I ship after so and so date. Ok, you're not in a rush, no problem. After weeks have passed you send an occasional reminder by PM and mail and no response. You think maybe the seller did not receive your message, you ask for an update in your original post. Nearly immediately the seller posts back "I will put it in the mail on Monday". You thank the seller for the response and start waiting again. Weeks and weeks pass again, nothing. You send a friendly email again asking for shipping information, a status, anything. No response. I understand that things get into the way, that you change your mind, whatever. I do not understand that someone does not provide a fellow forum member the basic courtesy of a response. I only want to know if I should still wait or go look somewhere else. Maybe I am old fashioned, but an agreement to buy or sell here on the forum to me is a contract that I feel bound to fulfill. Still bothers the heck out of me.

I had an experience similar to that of alang.

About a year ago I advertised a "wanted" ad in the Yankee Trader forum for an Exhibition needle bar. I received several responses to sell me one and one from an active participant of this forum to send me one for free if I pay postage. I believe (I hope) I thanked and declined all those who offered to sell me one and accepted the free offer.

I waited several weeks for the free needle bar but nothing arrived. I advised the person who made the offer of the lack of receipt and he advised he had shipped it. I asked him for the USPS tracking number as something was wrong. No tracking number from him. We exchanged several emails but still he would not send me a tracking number. Finally he sends me a photograph of three different needle bars, asking me to select the one I wanted. I replied with my selection, and he again claimed to have shipped it. Again no receipt, no offer of tracking number, and finally an email from him claiming that he did not have an Exhibition needle bar.

Obviously this was months after I advised all my other respondees declining their offers. And so here I sit with no needle bar and a bit discouraged about the whole thing.

This is a strange hobby.

One of the first things I learned in record swapping is that it's often pointless to trade records with people who only want specific artists. Chances are, they already have almost everything and they are only looking for needles in haystacks.

Bigshot you are probably right but common courtesy would have answered my PM and said he wasn't interested in what I had. That is point for posting this topic.
