WANTED: Tone arm Cap (VV-VI)

Post by Victrolacollector »

I have early VV-VI, and would like a top tone arm bracket cap, it just pushes down a little on the records.

Sorry, but I'm not sure what you are asking for. Jerry

The earliest VV-VI's had an unsupported tone arm bracket (left photo on the web page below), and the later ones had a support that went up the rear of the tone arm and held a pin at the top of the tone arm (right photo on the web page below). Is that what you need, the cap that holds the pin? If so, I have one and can post a pic later.

Mine looks like the model on the left. The tone arm has no support and drags down on the record. The pin does not appear bent, why is this happening?

Sorry but I don't have a machine in my collection where the tone arm pivots on a vertical post or rod. I do know that any tone arm needs to have have friction free lateral movement. With Victor, friction free vertical movement was provided by the U-tube. Does your tone arm move freely back and forth? If the answer is yes, your problem lies somewhere besides the tone arm. I assume you are using new needles. Sometimes a more modern 78 will bog down under the weight of a reproducer on an older machine. Late 78s from the 40's and 50's were frequently made from a softer material and were not intended for use on early acoustic Victrolas. Lastly, there may be a problem with weak springs that just won't power through a record.

If your tone arm does not move freely laterally, perhaps someone could explain how that type of tone arm is supported and kept off the portion of the back bracket directly below the large opening of the tone arm.

Actually, after disassembly, I got the thing lubricated, and it actually works great. I am not sure if the pin was broke or too short, but I removed the small bottom stop pin out of the tone arm pin, and now the tone arm pin goes all the way down into both holes.
