Victor 1 Cabinet That Matches

Post by gramophone78 »

A big thanks to Jerry B for sending me a copy of the "Cabinet That Matches" catalog. If you don't have one and if Jerry B stills has a few....I would recommend getting one.

Because of this catalog, I learned something new.

A cabinet that I had relegated to the attic is actually a Victor 1 "Cabinet That Matches".....

I remember buying it from a family with a Victor 2.

I guess I should keep it downstairs with the machine.... I would imagine not many were sold for such a cheap and small machine..??.

It's always great to learn something new.. ;).

I bought one of Jerry's Talking Machine Company catalogs a few years ago, and echo what everyone else is writing about them. :)

Wayne, your cabinet differs from The Cabinet That Matches in the design of the top. Compare yours to the catalog illustrations and you'll see what I mean.

I have one here that resembles yours, but the door on this one is hinged on the opposite side. I've seen a good number of these small cabinets over the years, and I suspect that those with flat tops (like ours) were sold for use with the I, II, or III.

George,
I see what you mean. However, I forgot to mention the nail holes are present where the molding once was. The pull/lock design seems to be as illustrated (unlike yours). A slight top design change may not be surprising. My Victor 4 Cabinet That Matches has bun feet (see attached) that are seen on the Victor 6 cabinet, but not on the Vic. 4 cabinet illustrated in the catalog. This leads me to think there are variations that were made along the way.
I should add, that the Vic.1 illustrated appears to be an earlier style case. Maybe my cabinet was for the later (10" turntable) case design..??.
Maybe someone else can post a Victor 1 cabinet to compare.

Here is an authentic one exactly like the catalog. This has the thick pillow top and then top molding intact. This is the proper handle as illustrated in the catalog. John

John, Thanks so much for posting the pics. As you stated...your cabinet matches the illustration exactly.
You also show an early Vic.1 case (as illustrated).
Here is a pic of my pull/lock and interior.
As mentioned....I'm wondering if my cabinet is for the later (larger) Vic.1..??. There appears to have been some alterations made by the company over time. Just as there were changes in Victor's case's.
I also know there are at least two Vic. 6 Cabinet That Matches. One for the smaller (early) case, and one for the later (larger) case. Both required different molding placement.

I would appreciate your thoughts on this cabinet. I need to decide if it goes back up to the attic or not....

Interesting.

As mentioned in an earlier thread, I recently picked up a "cabinet that matches" for a Victor II, Type M. Mine has the same door handle as John's, also on the right-hand side, and is like the one in the catalog. The numbering beneath the lower record storage slats on mine is similar to that on gramophone78's. (The upper slats on mine are now missing.)

I know there were some variations. For example a Forum member has a Victor II "cabinet that matches" that is like mine, except that the indented opening on the top is larger. This was apparently changed by the factory because later Victor IIs had bigger bases.

Well first off, dont put it back in the attic because every outside horn machine deserves a cabinet IMO. The handle you show is common found on record cabinets from the period in my experience. Any assumption about fitting a larger case machine (it does fit) until the face molding is replaced - would be just that - an assumption. I have never seen any illustration or product showing a larger case Victor 1 on a Cabinet that Matches.

I have had other "fitted top" cabinets for what I think were designed for Columbia outside horn machines but I am not familiar enough with Columbias or the cabinet manufacturer to comment. JD

Good point John. I wish I had more room to keep everything down on display.

As George mentioned, this cabinet may well be a generic cabinet of the period..I may be way off base regarding the possibility of being a variation for a late case Vic.1.

I would have to assume the hardware would have remained the same regardless of case alterations.
