Vince Giordano's Nighthawks hour radio program - HOT

Post by WDC »

I know it should be in the music section but I wanted to catch as much attention as possible.

Mac with the Antique Phonograph Music Program just recorded a full live evening with Vince Giordano's Nighthawks Orchestra, playing hot and authentic stuff - mostly from the late 20's.

You can listen online to the show at http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/AP or download it for offline listening. The .mp3 file might not be available for a prolonged time, so better it now!

If you ever have the chance to hear them live, take it! Vince's website is here: http://www.myspace.com/vincegiordanothenighthawks

The playlist wasn't yet up, so I have made it on my own. Here are the songs:
  • 1. Runnin' wild
    2. The Moon and you
    3. If I had a talking Picture of you
    4. Smile when the Raindrops fall
    5. Good old Days (The Little Rascals Theme Song)
    6. Memories of you
    7. Copenhagen
    8. Black Beauty
    9. 'taint so Honey, 'taint so
    10. The Blues my naughty Sweetie gives to me
    11. Chinatown, my Chinatown
    12. Salty
    13. I must have it
This is part one, part two will be broadcast next week. Enjoy!

Norman,

thanks for posting the link to this site again. There are some great shows on there and I never saved the site as a favourite when it was on the earlier board.

Some of us were still talking about Vince's truly wonderful performances at the BixFest in Racine, Wisconsin this past March at the Union Show. He was playing the bass sax /ala Adian Rollini/ and even had a chance to play one number on Rollini's old bass sax.

However, the real reason he was talked sill being talked about at Union was his playing on his aluminium string bass that he slapped /ala Stve Brown/, which is a rarity to hear these days, very few true students of this tough style of playing around these days anymore. Truly great.

I suspected the reason he switched from bass sax to acoustic upright is mostly so he can sing and play at the same time, whereas he keeps the same feel on the song, when he then goes back to the bass sax after his vocals. It was a genuine modern musical thrill to hear and observe this genius at work. Kudos!

And here's part 2 for download!

Below are photos of the Nighthawks and Vince playing at the Edison Hotel that I took in Oct '08. They're are a bit noisy but I did not use the flash, so I think they're good for these low-light conditions:
