My $25.00 ugly duckling rescued

Post by briankeith »

My restored ugly $25 duckling, a table top Silvertone that had a broken mainspring and was missing it's reproducer. I found and rebuilt the correct reproducer on EBay and replaced the broken mainspring. Cleaned the oak cabinet and regreased the moving parts. It still retains the original grille cloth and original turntable felt. Pot metal tone arm has a temp. repair until I can find a good one. (don't want to spend too much on this) I can't find a model number just a small Silvertone nameplate. Plays loud and clear now,, actually it's very loud :o

Way to go. Love these little machines. We can buy 12 of these vs 1 upright and still have room to walk in the house  Happy New Year to you and anyone else reading this.......

Very nice little machine... well worth the effort! :)

The other year, I picked-up a nice Silvertone upright in golden oak, with a fleur-de-lys cut-out grille, otherwise resembling a Victrola X or XI.

I have become quite fond of it... the build quality is nice, and while I think the tone arm is prone to air-leakage at the vertical swing-joint, it has a nice sound ( if somewhat quiet - perhaps there are other leaks I haven't tracked-down yet...).

It is a keeper.

Did these little Silvertone machines come with an adapter to play Pathé records too?

This is a nice little machine. For such a basic machine, it really has class. I like the molding and feet on the bottom of the case. You'll be happy with that machine.

Boy that Silvertone tone-arm sure has a big air gap at the back of the tube.

That is a little one for sure, but cute none the less. Many of the silvertones were made to play Pathé with the addition of a separate reproducer and pivot for the arm. I had a Mahogany Silvertone table model and I found it to be one of the best small machines of that type I had owned. The catalogs say they used the same quality motors and tone arms in their machines no matter the size.. I found mine to run exceptionally smooth and quiet as well as played very clear and loudly if necessary.

The pot metal tone arms are often found broken - this one needs a tone-arm but it is different then the floor models that pivot. This one is straight as an arrow but badly cracked..... I have done a temp repair but I would like to replace the tone arm without spending a lot of money on a $25.00 machine haha

I just adore this little model. Silvertone truly is my favorite brand of phonographs.
