Columbia # 6 disassembly: pretreatment b-4 removing spanner?

Post by De Soto Frank »

I need to put fresh rubber in the gold-plated # 6 reproducer of my Grafonola 200.

Under closed scrutiny, it appears that there are thin paper / cardboard washers between the spanner-ring and the rubber on the outer side of the diaphragm.

Are there any recommended pre-treatments or methods by which I can get this apart w/o destroying the paper washers ?

:monkey:

Thanks...

Frank

When I replaced mine, I used the gaskets that had the bottom gasket thicker than the other, and there didn't seem to be any need for a filler

The original paper washers are there to prevent too much friction between the rubber gaskets and the metal parts I think. I do not know of any special treatment, except being very careful when unscrewing the spanner ring. Whatever tool you use to unscrew it should not have sharp points that could damage the paper washers. I always used the thin rubber gaskets from Ron Sitko. It you have a paper hole punch that size you could probably create your own replacement paper washers, or if you have steady hands you might be able to cut them out with scissors.

Good luck!
