Rhode Island Edison A250 $350

Post by audiophile102 »

Now this looks like a steal of a deal for the collectors on the East coast.

I agree! If I were close enough, I'd jump all over this.

Geez, I'm still waiting over here in WNY! ;)

Beautiful... if I had the space, and if I didn't already have the C-250... :)

I snagged it. Emailed the fellow soon after it was listed.
I was initially hesitant. A three hour drive from Long Island to Rhode Island, but a couple of friends who are fellow collectors urged me to pull the trigger. Nice, early model. Not early enough for the louvered sides or the maroon motorboard, but still has the hinged motorboard and the well made dual spring motor. The finish is alligatored, but that's not difficult to wet sand and polish. It also came with 60 odd records, and three reproducers, among which is the nicest cast brass lateral 78 adaptor I've ever seen. It was a bargain at $300. Glad I listened to my friends.
Odd way to make my first post here, but I'm an oddball collector. I'm used to the absurd....

Congratulations on your (I assume) first A250, and welcome to the Antique Talking Machine asylum!

Thank You, Gentlemen.
To fill my cup to overflowing, I did some machine work on a clock movement for one of my aforementioned friends. I drove away with this Amberola V in exchange. I just have to fabricate a new governor drive gear, unless one is available.

Horribly alligatored finish. Like contemporary Victor cabinets, the lacquer is very thick. I recall years ago Dennis Valente and other purists using rottenstone, oil and a felt pad backed with a wood block. But I've gotten great results wet sanding with 1200 paper and using finishing compound to give it shine. Preserves the original lacquer and looks great.
