Victrola finish ??

Post by briankeith »

Would this be considered just regular oak that needs a good cleaning or fumed oak ?

It should all look like the inside of the lid. My money would be on it having the Weathered Oak finish, which was an option on the VV-IX. If you have Look for the Dog, see the finish sample page toward the front of the book. It looks like the exterior may already have been over cleaned, although that could be the flash used to take the picture. If it were mine I'd want to try to preserve that finish. I don't have data on how many were produced in the various finishes, but I'm guessing that weathered oak has got to be comparatively rare.

I agree about the underside of lid / interior surfaces being good clue to original finish.

Could also be some sun-bleaching on the front if it sat in / facing a sunny window for any length of time...

Confirms my memory that fumed oak is lighter than the one that Brian has.
