Value of Edison CD Sampler?

Post by Let Us Not Forget »

Hi all. I have an original copy (with insert and case) of the 1984 Edison CD Sampler. I am considering selling it but would like to know an approximate value. The only one I could find for sale is listed on eBay with a Buy It Now of $4,000. There are about two dozen people watching that auction but this seems very high to me. Does anyone know of any recent sales? Thanks!

From what I can see through the listings, no sales at these high prices have been realized. If you're planning to sell your own copy, I'd suggest listing it with a much, much lower start, with a reserve of your choosing. If there are any active bids on yours, you will get a realistic idea of what buyers are actually willing to pay.

Thanks, Bob. Traditionally, I always listed everything on eBay with a starting price of .99 and no reserve. Lately, I have found success using Buy It Now though. I think I saw one of these sell within the last year for around $1500 but can't be sure.

I'm not familiar with this "CD Sampler". If it's an actual compact disc, that price is insanely high. There's plenty of good music from that era of all types including Edison for the price of normal CDs.

The CD Sampler was a promo disc that was one of the first two CD's titles manufactured in the U.S.A. in 1983 or so. The other one was a Bruce Springsteen disc.

Ah okay. I've no idea what the value of such a thing could be then. It's about 60 - 100 years newer than most things I collect. :monkey:

Looks interesting, I found this on the internet. Never know on these things...sometimes it can be worth a few bucks sometimes several thousands.
It is interesting that Edisons music was re-released as a early CD, must tell us something about Edison recordings.

OH MY GOSH!!!

I think I might be playing my dad's copy in his old car! I'd better check!! (I hope it's something else!)

[EDIT]:
Wow! I am SO happy for Let's... original post and all you for chiming in. Turns out I have been tossing this CD about, leaving it in my dad's old convertible, playing it in memory of him. I found it on his [very cluttered] desk after he passed and didn't think much about it. Actually it turns out to be the 1987 version-- but still! I guess it was through people just like me whom my dad got his treadle for less that $100!

Which Edison recordings were included on such a historic CD?

Description in the e-bay listing. Historical interest recordings and recordings of Edison himself from the Edison recording laboratories.

Even - it claims - the Mary Had A Little Lamb tinfoil recording from 1877. I think that to be specious. But it might be a later recording of the rhyme that Edison recorded.
