But you have to rid the case of all mold spores I think (?)

I would try to. I would wipe and vacuum all the surfaces inside the box, then lay the open box directly in bright sunlight for a day. Any other ideas to kill spores?

Possibly white vinegar (?) Can't use bleach on this .......

Well they are black wax cylinders, however if you look in some of my old posts I give a method to clean them. It is worth a try.
