OMG - Can this go much higher?

Post by richardh »

Ive been watching this auction all week for this recording of the Savoy Orpheans playing their version of "The Charleston" on HMV.

Bidding started off quite sedately and has steadily climbed throughout the week. Just a few hours to go I wonder if it will go any higher?

OMG - can the bidding go any higher?!!!

Just in case your wondering what exactly they are paying a pile of cash for here is a transfer from my copy of this disk

The Charelston - Savoy Orpheans

I wouldn't mind adding this record to my collection.
But not for such a price!
I think someone REALLY wants that record...

Yep, looks like it. I thought I had paid a lot for my copy but I paid nothing like this for mine! In complete contrast I paid about £1 for my worn copy that I picked up in a junk shop...but it still plays great on my HMV 163. My good copy only gets played on my modern deck!

Folks,

It is THE emblematic song of the era. I myself have had very little luck finding recordings of it. I only have one at present. Good luck to whoever it is who wants it so badly!

Regards,
John

I agree, John. "Charleston" is the signature song of the '20s. Therefore, it is in great demand and will always sell for an inflated price.

Edison never released the Golden Gate Orchestra's rendition on Blue Amberol. If he had, can you imagine the bidding war that would generate?

Rocky,

I could just imagine how much it would go for!
He didn't release "California, Here I Come!" on BA either if remember correctly. I think that would create a bid war just as "Charleston" would have created.

I think I have heard the GGO version of the Charleston but I dont think it was on this board. Does anyone have a you tube video or a transfer of it as Id love to hear it again.

The Whiteman version of Charleston was a good seller- and Harry Barris does some scat singing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fp3UjngdW9c
