Wayne reflections...

My buddy Joe and I attended the meet at Wayne today ( so did a lot of other folks ! )

Got some supplies from Ron Sitko, said hello to forum member "gemering", and found some bits and pieces here and there, and (sigh) more records.


One vendor was offering 50 records for $10 ( around mid-day), including diamond discs. Another chap was already digging, and I decided to let him hunt in peace. He wound-up taking away 200 DD's ... I'm assuming he found some good ones... he had more fortitude than I did !

I found my 50 later, including about 12 DD's that I thought were worth a try at the price... I left behind a Homer Rodeheaver DD that looked un-played.

I also found about 12 cylinders that met my interests and budget.


An accidental sight was also most encouraging: a male teenager, accompanied presumably by his mother, walking out with a load of 10-inch 78's under his arm. Perhaps there will be future generations yet !

Always a good day at Wayne, followed by a stop at Hot Dog Johnny on the way home !

I was in a bit of a hurry since I was meeting someone an hour away with more records, a London upright and quite a bit of ephemera. Yes I bought that too I will be selling the London if anyone is interested.

Yes the turn out seemed better than the last 2, in my opinion. I also picked up my Edison Diamond disc 4 volumes by Charles Gregory. It was a Diamond Day!!

I had a rare moment of sanity (?) and told myself I didn't need all those DD's...

(But then I didn't "need" the 40+ laterals and 10 DD's that I did buy... )

I may have been that teenager you saw today. Although, I recall seeing at least two other young people there as well with their mothers. This was my first time at Wayne and I really enjoyed it!

I got hooked on talking machines when I was about five, and my folks went to an estate sale near Savage MD, an old ante-bellum property that had been in a prominent family for many generations. Among the stuff they came home with, was a Victrola XI, and lots of records.

Back then (1972), I wasn't allowed to touch the Hi-Fi or delicate LPs, but I was allowed to play with the Victrola as much as I wanted... so through the 1970's and '80's, while my peers were listening to pop standards of the day, I was listening to Billy Murray, Ada Jones, John McCormack, etc.

VERY few of my peers took any interest(to this day), but I still love the machinery, the music and the technology... and the fact that over 100 years down the road, a lot of this stuff still works fine !

Keep coming back to Wayne !

Hi,

Wayne was my first show as well, very nice show with something for most collectors. Unfortunately I couldn't stay long but there was plenty of interesting phonographs and items. Bought a ton of parts from Ron Stiko, and picked up 3 phonographs and some cylinders. Got the Edison Standard B running last night, and setup that large victor B&B horn I bought from Robin & Joan. Was nice to meet some of you as well.

1st show I did in two years and nearly cleared my two tables. My only regret was not being able to identify our members. I'm sure there were many there but it's impossible to put a user name and face together in situations like this...

May I suggest that member attending shows in the future have some way of identifying themselves.. It would be great to meet people face to face..

Maybe a small TMF pin or badge???

I had a great time this weekend! It was wonderful meeting so many at Charley Hummel's house (finally!) on Saturday, and could have spent a LOT more time in the conversations I had with Joan and Robin, Troy, Tony, Stuart M., Steve O., George P., and of course, Charley. I apologize to the folks I met and talked to that I haven't mentioned, my gratitude is more long lived than my memory can function.

What an amazing collection; his warmth and generosity is second to none. I am eternally grateful for everyone's kindness and their warm greetings.

What a great collection of folks we have in the community!

One final word; I have to say that as fabulous as the show was -- and is -- in the end, it was secondary for me to the experience of meeting and talking with so many great people, and also particularly after being fortunate enough to view two very different world-class private collections (one on Saturday, and another on Sunday afternoon on the return home); both visits were a significant high point of my very short and relatively insignificant collecting life thus far. I made some great new friends, and plan to stay in contact with them all.
