So, here's the other, 7 inch Zon-O-Phone from my recent haul:

A little query here: how long was the 'Shield' label used, after the dissolution of the National Gram-O-Phone Company? The back credits the Universal Talking Machine Company, so the pressing must be late 1901 to... 1902? 1903?

But what of the recording itself? Is there a reliable discography for these early Zon-O-Phones?

The National Gramophone Corporation (not company) underwent bankruptcy proceedings in September 1901. The Universal Talking Machine Company was not "Zonophone's second incarnation," but the manufacturing arm for Zonophone machines and records. Universal was organized in February 1898, and reorganized as the Universal Talking Machine Manufacturing Company on December 19, 1901; after the National Gramophone Corporation went under.

I don't know of a reliable discography for early Zonophones (although I understand one is one the way). Your example (Rocked in the Cradle of the Deep) appears to be a typical pressing of the late 1900 - late 1901 period. You probably already know that Ed Franklin was one of a few noms de disque used by Emilio de Gogorza.

Please take note of the errors in my old article which I pointed out in the thread - especially the 1899 dates cited from The Phonoscope. Zonophone records didn't appear until April or May of 1900.
