Orthophonic Sound Boxes: replacement diaphragms ?

Post by De Soto Frank »

Does anyone have any experience / opinions regarding the use of replacement diaphragms available from several sources for the Orthophonic Sound boxes ?

I have several Orthos with cracked / damaged diaphragms ( no longer air-tight, and some are "buzzy" ). (Some look as though there were run against a wire-wheel to clean-up the cover ! :o )

Are the replacement diaphragms "as good as" or close to the originals in terms of acoustic performance ?

Thanks !

Walt Sommers will go on and on that they are too thick, but nothing ever does please him.

Hi, George Epple suggested I look for an old diaphragm as he does not think the new ones sound as good as the originals.

Some time ago I bought some newly made diaphragms for building one of Sitko's Ortho kits and to rebuild an old soundbox. Lee Kirk who has since passed away made them, and they seem fine to me.

Who is making the ones currently for sale on eBay?
