Playing 33 ⅓ and 45 rpm on a DD Machine

Post by Victrolacollector »

Has anyone thought of whether it would be possible to play 33 ⅓ or 45's on a DD Machine? I think it would be possible if the weight could be replaced with one made on a 3-D printer with light plastic. The stylus would have to be made to accommodate the groove. The gearing would have to be solved by just letting the grooves drive the machine.

Not with the Edison reproducer because it is for vertical cut and 33's and 45's are lateral cut. As to having the groove drive the horn, that is a lot of weight for a piece of vinyl to move.

I've played 45's on one using a lateral adapter- it was a stunt and no reason to do it again

There is a horror movie trailer that came out recently where they actually played a 33 ⅓ (or a vinyl 78?) on an Edison Machine. I'm sure the awful noise of the machine destroying the record added to the ambiance of the film.

Did they even notice that it didn't sound right?

At a party, I had a glass of wine or two and decided to play a late 50s vinyl 78. It played, but it also put out nice vinyl party streamers from the needle as it scoured out the grooves.
