Victrola IV for $20 in Machines

Post by edisonplayer »

At a local flea market I picked up a Victrola IV for the amazing price of $20! :D The dealer had $30 on it,but he gladly took $20.It needs LOTS of TLC,and lacks an Exhibition reproducer.A mouse lived in the motor compartment at one time, and I cleaned out his nest.Either the IV was stored in a barn or in a basement.Someone also put a mahogany stain over the golden oak,but didn't put shellac over that.I'm having an older man at the antique center in my town clean it up for me.I must say that I did VERY well for my $20! :D edisonplayer BTW;my IV dates from 1914 and has the serial number of 152438 E.

That's a great deal!
I was happy to get a similar era IV for $50. It did have the reproducer, it just needed to be cleaned and have a broken spring replaced.

I really like the VV-IV. They are a nice machine in a small package. When these first came out in 1911, the buyer got a lot of bang for their buck. That was a great deal, you got.

When I got the IV back yesterday I just fell in love with it.My friend at the antique center did a FABULOUS job cleaning it up! :D I said,"I'm gonna keep it,I don't care WHAT my family says!!BTW;I just bought a rebuilt Exhibition soundbox on EBay for my new baby. That way,I won't have to keep taking off the Exhibition on my Victor II when I want to play the IV.edisonplayer PS;After I get my taxes back next year I'll have Tim Fabrizio clean the motor and put a new green felt on the turntable.

Edisonplayer, a VV-IV is a wonderful little machine and a great one to learn the basics of repair or restoration. I would encourage you and every other collector that has not enjoyed the satisfaction of working on a machine to give it a try. With very little effort a cabinet can be cleaned and polished. Replacing turntable felt is easy and makes a dramatic improvement in appearance. Rebuilding an Exhibition is also easy and makes an incredible improvement. Please take my comments with the good intentions they are given. I understand that not everyone enjoys working on a machine. I am glad you are enjoying your Victrola. :)
