One important point to check when buying the Edison D series machines is to make sure the mandrel spins freely. The pot metal bearing can swell and present the mandrel from spinning. That's an important bargaining chip when buying these later Edison phonographs.

There is a pot metal bearing that is on the inside of the casting to hold the mandrel. It's hard to see unless you are up close.

i believe I know what you are referring to. I believe that may be the problem with my machine. Can that part be knocked out and be replaced? Ron Sitko?

Ron Siko sells them. They are made of oil-lite Bronze. You have to remove the mandrel, pulley, and gears. Then you have to carefully work out the mandrel. After that, you have to chip out the old bearing. If you have Eric Reiss's Complete Talking machine book, there is a detailed step by step article on how to do it.

Yep, I think there are some threads on getting it out. Ron probably has them. Worst case find a local machinist to fix you up a bronze bearing.

Once I get the mandrel out I have used a ground down hacksaw blade to notch it. then It seem to chip out easier. Go slowly getting the mandrel out. I ruined one when a screwdriver I was using to chip it out scored the shaft. New shaft ordered and replaced.. Tom
