This machine was a breakthrough in engineering, a marvel of its age, and way ahead of its time. Here the description from the original advertising. (translated from the original swiss so the translation may be a bit off - google translator!)

Marked by pure lines and a clean aesthetic, the Thorens CT60 cooker siphon phonograph merges extraordinary design and the highest quality materials with Swiss craftsmanship to create a refined phonograph with orthophonic character. The case is finished according to exacting Thorens standards, and a sapphire crystal stylus is a marvel of the modern world. A look inside the precisely milled cabinet unveils the pedigree Swiss phonograph movement. The unity of the individual components working in harmony with one another is guaranteed to make the playing of your favorite record a truely one time experience.

VERY Strange looking contraption to be an actual phonograph... It looks like it was made from cooking utensils - funnels and a stovetop pot...

I must admit, some of the parts have that certain "basement tinkerer" look about them.... :?

"Guaranteed to make the playing of your favourite record a truly one time experience" is probably true. One play and the record will be trashed.

Well, it comes from India, so there you are...

The personal phonograph once belonging to the Maharaja of Coochbahar. He and the Maharani used to dance to its sonorous notes, under the moonlight, along the Ganges. Oh the romance of it all... It's well noted that their favorite song was, "I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate", to which even their pet cobra would rise from its basket. They were quite the jitterbugs. A bygone era, to be sure. A very reasonable price, considering the provenance. You can almost smell the waters of the Ganges when it's played.

The fine attention to detail on the feet should not be overlooked, finely crafted to represent the 4 greatest mountains in the Alpine Thorens country, Matterhorn, Eyjafjallajökull, Vesuvius, and St Helens.

Somehow I thought Madonna had been the inspiration, at least on one side.

I was in India in January, and have watched Indian search sites for certain HMV models that I seek out. I have yet to find a gramophone in India that has not been messed with in some way.
