I think he's serious about it, but I think he will have a hard time selling one needle...

Maybe he did a search on Ebay to check the value of them and saw the diamond tipped needle for playing DD's on a regular phonograph that sold for somewhere in the ballpark of $50.

I suspect he's one of those people who thinks that something "Old" and "Original" must be rare and expensive. It's probably a used needle too.

Well the box has that Iconic dog picture on it. He probably got a whole tin full of them and is going to auction them off one at a time. I know I'll be up late sniping when that auction closes! One (1) authentic RCA medium tone gramophone needle from one of those little tin boxes with the iconic picture of Nipper the Dog listening to his master's voice on a Victrola. The needle is approximately 15 mm long and 1 mm in diameter.

I asked him if he was serious: his reply:
"Indeed ... but if you only need one needle to complete an existing or restored gramophone (I restored mine from bits and pieces), why buy 500 needles?"

Thinking about this "matter" a bit more seriously, it still seems to be a lesser know fact, this changing of the needle after each play.
I bought a soundbox not that long a go from a seller with 1000s of positive feedback stars on the Bay, specializing in antiques. It arrived with a badly worn needle in the shuck...
I've also seen listing, not that seldom, of machines & soundboxes, with a listing stating that a needle is included or even worse, "it still has its original needle!"
So, a buck for a needle that lasts a lifetime, is great value methinks
