Blast from the past....

at least it has survived but condition wise a bit wanting. Is there a way - in cases like this - to fill in the pitting and replate it?

Possibly- you could plate it with copper, then polish, then plate, then polish, until everything would be smooth enough for a Nickle plate. I suppose there are other means, but they might cost more than the value of the machine.
