Edison Home your Expert statement

Hello everybody

One of my friends proposes to me to buy at a very good price a "EDISON Home". I have confidence in this seller, but you can never too be careful. Forewarned is forearmed. Better safe than sorry.

He sent me some pictures. That may not be enough. I can ask for more. But first, I would like to have your opinion on this phonograph. Because unfortunately, I know absolutely nothing about this type of devices.

It's a 1901-1903 Edison Model "A" Long version (Long Bedplate) Phonograph.

...And it looks to be in Really nice shape! I say "Buy It" if the price is right...

Also, A few things, The Phonograph has a Edison Cygnet Horn Bracket on the back, but there is no Cygnet Horn, A Period Aftermarket (Non-Edison) Brass Horn has been swapped in its place. No biggie.. I also don't see the
the Original Wooden Cover Top for the Phonograph. That would definitely factor in the prce if it happened to be missing...so look for it.

What was the guy asking for it??

The Home looks like a very nice phonograph. It's a two minute player only which is the way it came from the factory. When four minute cylinders were introduced in 1908 conversion kits were made available for all two minute players. Good two minute cylinders are slightly more difficult to find than four minute records. I am also curious about the asking price. Jerry Blais

Has the Cygnet Horn Bracket been added later on the cabinet or is it an original?
Is the Brass Horn an Edison? What is its present value?
I would like to remove the Brass Horn and put a Cygnet Horn instead. Is it possible?
The lid is not on the pictures, but it is well present, and it is in excellent condition.

Finally, I would like to do a little cleaning without risking damaging anything. What would you recommend to me?

The Cygnet bracket was added later and is not original to the machine but it was put to good use and looks nice. I would leave it "as is" and enjoy it. The horn is appropriate for a long green Home. I don't believe your Home would be correct with a Cygnet unless it was converted to a two and four minute player. For cleaning your machine I would suggest using the search feature of the Forum. You'll find many posts on the subject regarding Kotten Klenser or GoJo hand cleaner. Either would work great and at little risk. Jerry Blais

Hi Pat, It's probably possible to use a cygnet horn on your machine but it didn't originally come that way. The horn that is on the machine now is the type that would have been originally used with your Home A.

Condition to me looks to be just fair. I guess its opinion but for a machine thats fairly common, I'd hold off for a nicer one unless the price is very very good. The decal has severe damage, the finish on the wood around the top works is very well worn.

I think when it comes to buying more common examples, best practice is to buy the absolute best all original example you can find.

Assuming the Cygnet bracket is mounted where it should be for a Cygnet horn, you can do whatever you like. It is possible. If the original owner added the conversion kit to play four minute cylinders, a Cygnet horn would have been a desirable option to upgrade and modernize the Home. From my point of view, it is a two minute phonograph and should be displayed as such. When these machines were current, I can't imagine any two minute machine used with a Cygnet horn but I could be incorrect. Jerry Blais
