I wish they hadn't, but it is the sort of style that lends itself the being painted white

Actually a very well done remake, in good taste and it looks much better than the original.

I agree with Carlos... since this was a gutted cabinet, the lady doing this did a fantastic job of painting it and saving it as a useful cabinet. Much better than most painted furniture that I have seen...

How do you play records with all that potpourri and flower arrangements covering the lid?

You don't... there are no phono guts inside...

I never understood turning something functional AND decorative into something merely decorative.

I used to own one of these Sonora Louis XV (I think) models. The slender legs aren't really up to the challenge of supporting the weight of the machinery and two full record compartments. Two of the legs had broken before I bought it. I drilled the legs neatly then glued in dowels to offer additional support. I sold it to another collector, who some years later broke two of the legs trying to slide the machine across the floor fully loaded with records, then broke the other two legs in trying to get it into his basement. Mine had the wooden tonearm with vertical-record attachment housed in a pull-out tray set into the side of the playing compartment. Much as I dislike this sort of shabby chic stuff, in this case it wasn't such a bad idea.
