7" Standard Disc Records

Post by CDBPDX »

Just got a small batch of 7" Standard Disc records with the 9/16" spindle hole. These are the first I've seen. Pretty cool!

Cool. I'd never seen one either.

If so, they're probably hiding, miscategorized, in some junk shop or Goodwill's stash of 45s...

Apparently there was an early version Standard Disc machine that only played these 7" records.

The open works Standard Talking Machine Model AA, which is identical to the Columbia AU had a 7" turntable. It is probably responsible for the many 7" Victor records with an enlarged center hole. I assume that the Standard 7" record selection was very limited, so people drilled other records instead.

Here are a few pictures of my Standard Model AA open works machine that plays the 7" records. The machine is all original and in great shape. Plays very good also.

This is probably a dumb question, but what about that Standard AA prevents it from playing 10-inch records?

Spring motor duration. Try rewinding it while playing a 10" record.

The Standard AA has a larger spindle which only accommodates Standard records.
Yes, but they made 10" records with the same larger hole.
