Yes, that's a great catalogue. The picture of the motor is interesting. It looks remarkably similar to the Paillard motors I've seen in Cheney's, but with one major difference. The one in the pictures shows one spring barrel containing 2 springs. All the Paillard motors I've seen have had separate barrels for each spring.
It'll be interesting to see what Sean's machine has in it.

Shane,

I'm almost certain both my Cheney's have two separate barrels in them. I'll get pics up as soon as I can get home and take some shots.

My motor has a single barrel with two springs- there's a plate between them and they share a two piece arbor which allows one spring to power the other only in the proper direction. Who ever built it, it's a good motor and very quiet.

Get find! I had several Cheneys way back and found them interesting with my limited knowledge at the time. (and now). I was always fascinated by their claim of superior sound, but found at least at the time that the reproducers were difficult for me to get adjusted to work well. I would guess with hind site that today I would have a much different way of looking it it, plus resources such as this one to help work though any issues that would come along.

For those of you that still have Cheneys how do you find the overall sound quality? If I recall mine was somewhat subdued compared to say Victors. Not all bad, but clarity was an issue that at the time I couldn't seem to reach..

Hi Larry,

Cheney's don't sound bad, but you HAVE to rebuild the reproducers which can really be a chore. The rubber mounts the needle bar pivits sit on need to be fabricated (from regular white gasketing) and replaced. The gaskets themselves need to be replaced too. Standard white tubing is fine, but you have to use a thin grafonola gasket cut down on the inside and white on the outside, from what I've found. The results are quite good. You've also got to do some sealing in the tonearm base with grease, but there are air leaks you can't do much about unless you wanted to start building special gaskets, something I haven't bothered with but might when I start really tackling the new machine I got later this fall. Getting the motor to actually run properly is first priority though. The Cheney I have that is running and has rebuilt reproducers sounds a bit louder than a Brunswick. It isn't anything to scoff at.

The Cheney that I had was a large beast, about the width of three standard uprights side by side. The cabinet stood high on two heavy posts with two tied together with an ornate stretcher and large feet. It was probably about 5 feet tall with record storage on either side. Two small doors opened on the front to give you access to the electricly powered platter.

Horn was just underneath those doors, ~6 inches tall x 12 inches wide. Amazingly small for such a large cabinet.

It sounded just okay but then the reproducer was not rebuilt and I'm sure they were airleaks.

Anybody have a picture of such a thing?
