Early Amberola ID plate

I have a early Amberola 30. The one where the ID plate is mounted on the metal bed, behind the cylinder mandrel. What did they use to mount this. The plate is off and one very small hole is clear and the other has something broke off in it. Did they used very small machine screws, rivets or some thing called a hammer screws. The hammer screw looks like a rivet, but it has some threads on it and you just hammer it in place.

They are what you're calling "hammer screws". I call them escutcheon pins.

Drive screw, they were used on old motorcycles a lot to mount the ID plates.

1st prize goes to --- JerryVan---. I was able to tap the broken part out of the hole with 1/16 punch and small hammer. It is brass and it does not have any threads on the side. And it was peened over from the bottom. The hole is 1/16" and the pin measures out to .054"
So it is a "escutcheon pin" or brass brad peened over. It should not be too hard to replace.
You can see from the photo how much of it was peened over underneath.

I just got back from Home depot. They had a small plastic container with #18 x ¾" Brass " Escutcheon pins" for $1.33. I should have know better. The asian made stuff is rarely close to what it should be. The new pins only measure out at .0352" . The McMaster Catalog specs their 18# gauge at . 050". Time to shop around again.

I was able to find some of the brass round head 16 gauge ones, they measured at .060". I ordered them and when they get here I will post a picture. If you look at the photo of what was left of the pin that I knocked out. You can see where the factory just pushed them in and then it looked like they used a blunt punch cut it off at the backside. They did not peen them over. The photo clearly shows where the back end of the pin was smeared over and not cleanly cut or peened. I would guess that would be the fast way of doing it.

I picked mine up at Ace Hardware. They were 3.00 or so, I just snipped them to the proper length and tapped them in with a small hammer.
I have some gold ones, if anyone needs them I could send some for price of postage.
