What Cylinder Is This?

Post by startgroove »

Found this cylinder record recently. It has the patent date that is the same as the one on Columbia Indestructibles, but the title is ink stamped instead of embossed. Also, no plaster inside, but it fits on a mandrel and plays fine. It is marked #957 "Darkies Dawn". Does anyone know what it is?

Thank you two for the information. Is there supposed to be plaster, or some other material, in the core?

US Lamberts had no cores, just a shell of celluloid.

Do a search for "pink Lambert" and you'll see the more valuable cousin of your cylinder. Yours is referred to as a "black Lambert", (guess why...). Yours has some value as well, but since I'm not truly a "record guy" I can't say for sure just how much. As mentioned, there never was any plaster in your record.

Sean is correct, but it's worth noting that at least some of Lambert's British "cousins" made by Edison Bell did have plaster cores.

Yes, It's known as a "Black Lambert" and is a nice find.

Repro Containers for Black Lamberts are available if you wish to purchase one or more..
