Hrmm... it was quite a while ago, but I started the thread asking why this LP format didn't catch on. I mean the idea of playing LP dics, 20 minutes and 40 minutes... you would not have to change records every 3-4 minutes. If you think about it Edison was what... a good 25 years ahead of the technology in which the 33 ⅓ LP would be the standard format.

Well, a lot of people on the forum were trashing the sound and the black (painted?) color of these cabinets. When I actually got the machine and played a LP disc, I didn't think it sounded so bad.

Here's the 3-C I have: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W62mP1x46T8

...but it is *very* sensitive. ...I suppose that is because there are 400 lines per inch, even more than a modern LP. If you walk by this machine too hard, it will skip. \

So, I guess it was too late for old man Edison when he rolled out this LP system. When this was released in 1927, it would be only 2 years later in 1929 when the entire Edison phonograph division was closed.

With Orthophonic... and Victor... and Radio rising, this never caught on... plus the LP dics released were not original materials, but many DD's strung together.

As for the cabinet appearance, while this one needs some fixing up... I don't think they are all-together ugly. :-)
