What year is this Edison Standard A ?
This is an Edison that is coming up at auction soon and I was wondering what year it was made? Its in decent shape but the bottom case is a bit rough, especially the bottom trim.

What's the serial number? That way we can tell.

I cant make it out in the pictures. I blew them up as much as possible but cant tell. Maybe the style of the case or shiny name plate can narrow it down?

Without a serial number, this is probably your best resource:

As you've already pointed out, the photo isn't too sharp. It rather looks like a late 4 clip machine with a type 3 patent plate (with serial number in it), serial number in straight edge, and no raised boss for serial number. These features would indicate a late version of the 4 clip machine - up to about Oct/Nov 1901. (At least, that is what I think I see in the photo!
) I'd expect a serial number in the upper 30,000s to lower 40,000s. It looks like a nice example. Hope this helps!

Thanks Martin. I thought that might be the case but wasnt sure. I really want a pre-1900 Standard A. Would I need to find a 2-latch case?

George can probably tell you better, but you'll want something numbered about 15000 or lower. Most of these will be 2 clip machines, but you'll see some notable exceptions that were most likely warranty repair/re-manufactured machines. Number 283 is one of these. Although it was initially shipped early on, it has all of the earmarks of the machines produced in 1900. Anyway, good luck on the search!

Well, if "pre-1900" is your criteria, Martin nailed it. You'll want a number below 15471.
